FAQs
What can I expect during a pelvic floor evaluation?
A pelvic floor evaluation will start similar to any physical therapy visit. First we will discuss relevant medical and surgical history including any examinations or referrals from your physician.
Next, I typically perform a movement assessment, examining range of motion and strength throughout the spine, hips and abdominals as relevant to your concerns.
Lastly and if appropriate, a formal pelvic floor exam is the last step in the evaluation. I always provide my patients with options as I want you to feel as comfortable as possible during your session. A pelvic floor exam includes evaluation of the tissues of the vulva, assessing the first layer of pelvic floor muscles externally, and observing the movement of the pelvic floor. This portion of the exam can include palpation of the tissues or can be completely hands off.
An internal exam may be performed which includes a single gloved finger inserted into the vaginal canal to assess for strength, endurance and relaxation of the pelvic floor muscles. The internal exam may involve either the vaginal opening or the rectum (sometimes both) depending on your concerns and goals.
Do you accept health insurance plans?
I am what is considered a cash based practice only so I do not accept insurance plans. I can provide itemized receipts for those that may want to submit them to their insurance companies towards their deductibles. Unfortunately due to current Medicare laws, if you are a Medicare recipient or are Medicare eligible, I am unable to provide you with physical therapy services in my private practice. However you are more than welcome to schedule with me for wellness or personal training sessions.
Do you treat men?
At this time I am not currently seeing male patients in my office.
Is pelvic floor therapy considered sex therapy?
While we may certainly discuss sexual function and how it relates to pelvic floor function, pelvic floor PT is by no means sex therapy. If you are interested in receiving sex therapy, I can guide you to a website search engine to find a provider to suite your needs.
I’m currently on my cycle, can I still attend my session?
Absolutely! The menstrual cycle is a normal part of life and I am comfortable treating my patients during their cycle as long as they are comfortable receiving care at that time.
Can I bring my baby to my appointment?
Absolutely! One of the perks of doing what I do is getting to meet all of the babies! While tending to the little one may be necessary during our session, all I ask is that the child does not become a distraction so that you can really focus on your goals and what you’d like to achieve during our sessions. I look forward to meeting them!
Can I bring my dog to my appointment?
Well behaved pups are always welcome to our sessions! Having your furry companion with you can bring some joy and lightness to more intense sessions. All I ask is that the pup does not become a distraction so you can really focus on your goals and what you’d like to achieve during our sessions. I look forward to meeting them!
